What is Flat Affect?

In this study, researchers examined facial emotional expressions produced by individuals with schizophrenia, unipolar depression, and normal control subjects. The results showed that individuals with schizophrenia produced expressions with diminished intensity relative to controls, while those with unipolar depression exhibited more pronounced facial asymmetry (12). These findings support the idea that flat affect is a symptom of certain mental health conditions, particularly schizophrenia.
